I refer to black people as n i g g e r s but I don't mean anything insulting by it? And I don't say it to them, because obviously that's disrespectful.

That fact that you use the word n-word in such a casual fashion helps explain why racism is still alive and well in the world. How in the world can you not find anything insulting about referring to black people by the use of the n-word?

As a black person, I'm deeply offended by the use of the word. Whether you're overheard by a black person when you use the word or not, I don't understand why you use it at all. But, like another poster said, you have the right to say anything you want to say. Does the fact that this site would not allow you to use the word tell you anything? You had to space it out like that for it to be in your post.

If it's disrespectful saying it at any time, or to anyone, then it's disrespectful at all times.
Some people are very touchy about their race or background. If you feel you must refer to any group by an improper name, make sure you're refering to the Irish. They don't take offense at all the names they're given. That's what makes them so great.

Not necessarily, besides it's not what you say but how you say it and what you mean when you say it. The audience is also important, if no one hears you then why should I care. Also remember, it is just a word, and NO ONE has the right to judge you or anyone for that matter. I do admire the guts you have to post this question though.

Saying it in general is an insult. And the fact that you won't say it in front of anyone who's black shows that you know it's wrong. I think that if you are going to be racist and use that word, say it in front of a black person once and suffer the consequences! I agree with freedom of speech, you shoud be able to say anything you want...just be willing to accept the consequences of your words!!!

You acknowledge it is disrespectful. The disrespect relates specifically to colour. It is the process of categorising another human being in a disrespectful manner specifically because of colour and consequently your disposition towards them is discriminating. Is it racist? Ask yourself.

Racism is the act of feeling one's own race superior and to denigrate another class of human beings on the false belief that they are inferior.
If you are not a racist as you claim, then you must recognize that the N word insults the sensitivity of a whole class of human beings, to whome this word was used as a denigrating word given their conditions of slaves, slavery imposed by anothr full class of people who wrongly believed (and many still do) that African stock or black skin is inferior.
So don't use it man, don't. take it out of your vocabulry for the sake of your own definition of not racist and embrace mankind as a whole.

But you have to be responisble with your freedom of speech. You can't just go to a group of kids and curse at them. And to answer your question, *you* don't mean anything insulting by it but some black people may find it insulting.

Yep. You know perfectly well it's disrespectful, and your encouraging others to be disrespectful and racist by using that word at all.

It also makes you sound uneducated and ignorant.

To tell you the truth, I preferred it when y'all said it to our face. Then, we knew what was on your minds.

Now, we look at a mask with a big old s _ _ _ eating grin on it while you're calling us N _ _ _ _ _ behind our backs. Maybe not bigotry in your eyes but you got me beat - I'm told I have to love my brother as myself.

Please note the differences:
Racial discrimination: is differences in treatment of people on the basis of characteristics which may be classified as racial, including skin color, cultural heritage, and religion.

Racialism: is a term often found within white separatist literature, inferring an emphasis in racial origin in social matters. Racism infers an assumption of racial superiority and a harmful intent, whereas separatists sometimes prefer the term racialism, indicating a strong interest in matters of race without a necessary inference of superiority or a desire to be harmful to others. Rather their focus is on racial segregation and white pride.

So, comparing those definitions, you are not racist, but are exercising your racialism. Toodles.
