telling a lie?

my wife cut our daughters hair and over the weekend the girls went to spend the day with my mother. my mother took the girl to a beauty shop to have her hair trimmed up. they got the haircut from a girlfriend of my wife and my mother told my daughter to say she saw the lady at the grocery store.

my wife noticed the hair cut, which she kind of butchered, and asked about it. my daughter said that mom had told her not to tell.

i think this is bad behavior and confronted my parents and my dad just got angry and said they were trying to spare feelings and said next time they would just say what they felt.
