hydrogen peroxide. it feels so funny 'cause it's gonna tingle.

avoid the cotton swab (q-tip) this "pushes" the wax further in the ear.

Keeping Ears Clean (no Q-tips please!!)

What's the best way to get rid of ear wax?

One thing you definitely don't want to do is get rid of all your earwax. Earwax isn't dirt. It's a normal secretion that protects your ear, just the way other kinds of wax protect your car. Once I had an earache and the doctor rinsed and rinsed, leaving me no ear wax. Soon (within days) my ear was hurting, badly. I went to a ENT doc (ear, nose, throat) who found some kind of black fungus! It has grown because I had something called dry ear syndrome, which was caused by one of my medications. For several months I had to regularly have the doc scrape out that fungus. I could not eat all kinds of foods that could cause more problems! It was not a very pleasant experienc.

If water gets in your ear canal -- while you're swimming or taking a shower, for instance -- earwax will cause the water to bead up and move away from your eardrum. Then the slipperiness of the wax encourages the water to run out of the canal. In addition, earwax is slightly acidic, which discourages bacterial or fungal growth in the moist, dark ear canal. Without earwax, it would be much harder to avoid ear infections.

In a way, it's part of a self-cleaning system. Most people don't need to do any ear maintenance at all. Earwax slowly migrates toward the opening of the ear canal and is sloughed off. If you want, you can take a washcloth and, using your finger, gently wash the opening of your ear.

Whatever you do, don't poke a cotton swab into your ear. A swab may remove a little wax, but it's also likely to push some deeper into the ear canal. Because the canal is hourglass-shaped, earwax can create a plug that won't come out on its own.

A small minority of people do produce unusually large amounts of earwax. If your ear canal keeps getting clogged, you may need to see your doctor occasionally to have it removed. Most physicians use jets of carefully-controlled water to rinse out the ear canal and remove impacted wax. Ear specialists use a magnifying scope and a small instrument to remove wax.

Can you do it yourself? Sure, though it's a good idea to check with your physician first. Removing wax on your own is not recommended if you have a history of ear infections or other ear problems such as a hole in the eardrum.

To remove excess wax, you'll need a kit of wax-dissolving drops and a rubber bulb syringe, both of which are available at almost any pharmacy. The kits usually come with instructions, which you should follow carefully.

Remember not to use cotton swabs in your ears, and the chances are they'll take good care of themselves.

This is sad, but I know of so many ways.....

Of course you can try to wipe/dig wax out with a q-tip. But that's dangerous if you're not careful, and it actually tends to push the wax further in instead of removing it.

Hydrogen peroxide fizzes on contact with skin, and would probably loosen up what's in there, to be flushed out by some other means.

To actually flush the wax out, I recommend plain water. Use a baby bulb (can get them at your drug store, meant for sucking snot from their noses). Fill it up, hold your ear open (like when you're putting in ear plugs), and squirt the water in. Squeeze hard so you're actually forcing the wax back out of your ear with the water. You'll feel better in no time.

Another alternative that I'm hesitant to try but have heard of many times is something called "ear candles", which are essentially wicks that use your ear wax as fuel. I've heard of people who really like them......

Put some hydrogen peroxide on some cotton and put the cotton in your ears while you take a shower. When you take the cotton out of your ears, it should be softened enough to gently use a q-tip to get out. There are kits in the drug store if that doesn't help. Or just make an appointment with an eye ear nose throat doctor who can flush it out.

you arent supposed to do this but i do:
take a q-tip and wipe it out inside of your ear. make sure you DONT STICK IT IN FAR!!! or you may damage part of your ear and lose your hearing. you should be able to hear/feel when it is getting too far. i never let it go past the cotton part. be very careful if you try this. i do this every day. i find ear wax disturbing.
good luck!

i've heard that hydrogen peroxide will loosen it up for you. then you can flush them out with water with a bulb syringe...this technique is used at the doctor's office to remove excess wax from patients' ears.
