Because they have enzymes in their spit that kill out the bacteria in their wounds. They lick their own sores also.

Dogs as well as other animals have very active antibacterial enzymes in their saliva. I have a small dog who washes out the cats ears for them.. they have tendency to accumulate mites in their ears. The dog is actually smaller than the cats, so is a convenient height for cleaning.
