There are several things you can try. If the acne is is all red and looks pretty bad I recommend proactive as shown on the infomercials they work pretty good. It didn't take away all the acne but then again i only used it for 6 months then i switched to oky cleansers and creams and i think they are making a difference. I thinking the skin might get used to a product after.
I think it has to do with my hormones.

I have had the same problem-- my acne just wouldn't seem to go away... But, here are some things that might help: Try cetaphil daily cleanser, any cleanser with aloe in it, or Neutrogena daily cleanser... If those daily cleansers don't work, the dermatologist might actually help. Something that helped my skin a little was Clindamycin, which was prescribed to me by a dermatologist. There is also Differin, which helped as well. Tazorac is another possible solution... But, if your acne is bad enough, and nothing else seems to be working, a dermatologist may decide to put you on Acutane, which is about a 5-month treatment which is a pill to be taken every day... It has a lot of risks, though, because you CANNOT get pregnant while on Acutane-- your baby will come out with birth defects... You also CANNOT break a bone while on it, because you can permanantly damage your break. There are also small and possibly huge side affects-- some people have commited suicide while on Acutane... Therefore, I would suggest just trying those daily cleansers, then if that doesn't work, maybe going to a dermatologist-- it might not seem like the best way to cure your acne, but they are trained in what they do, and it is the only way to make sure you are doing the right thing for your skin!

I would go to the dermatologist first thing...I would not wait it out any longer. Your dermatologist can give you some great options. Dermatologists are some of the smartest people who graduated from med school. It is the most competitive job because it allows for a 9-5 work day and a lot of med students want that!!
Your dermatologist may give you an oral retanoid such as Accutane. But, beware, it does have side effects.
You could also try topical non-perscription medicines such as AnceFree or Proactiv. These medicines are very popular and I believe have good results. Many of my friends and sorority sisters have used Proactiv and their skin looks good.

Over the counter medicated ingredients to look for are salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxiode, not to be confused with regular peroxide. Also you want to make sure that you don't have sensitive skin. I have oily and sensitive skin and had "adult" acne. Not severe, but when I started using BeautiControls Skin Equation formula for sensitive skin, it cleared up. You should use both a cleanser and a toner.

I use St. Ives Apricot scrub for acne prone skin everyone morning in the shower. Then I use an astringent (I use the Wal-Mart generic, works great and is cheap) before I put on my makeup to make sure my skin is nice and clean. When I come home I use a mild soap(try Dove) to take off my makeup and then use and astringent and then use it agian right before I go to bed. Every other day I use an acne pad (like the stridex kind) in place of the astrigent before I go to bed. This works great for me. Dunno if it will for you, tho, but I hope it helps.
