Once the boss knows you're leaving, there may be a change in behavior towards the employee. The boss might demand the emploee leave immediately or punish the employee. Let's face it, they have power over you.

It is a guilt issue and a feeling of selfishness. The boss gave you a job and allowed you an opportunity to succeed. When you have to face him to tell him your leaving, in most cases you have some guilt. More and more employees view any job as a job. The boss views your job as his. When you leave, the reason is usually, but not always that the new job offers more money or a better opportunity. Your guilt may stem from that act of selfishness that causes you to think about your future and not the future of the business you are leaving.

They might think that they will be cheated out of money owed them for vacation time or that boss will bad mouth them to remaining employees.

When I was in that situation I was actually worried that boss would make a great counteroffer and I would not want to leave and go to the new job I was accepted for. When that did happen I took the counter offer but had a real problem getting the new company to accept what happened. It was not a pleasant situation to end up in with the new company (but worked out great with old company).

In some companies, the Boss's just s*ck! I used to work in a place where my boss was always saying stupid s*it and it was not a good boss at all. His company was considered as bad employment because when I was cashier, other workers used to go in to my box and get change. Almost everyday, we used to loose around 100 bucks! So I quited because of bad employment and I did not tell him I was quitting because he would of tried to keep me working in his dumb job! Instead I went and dropped off my uniform and just walked out.

The company I'm talking about is KFC and I hope none of you go eat there again because the chicken is expired most of the time and they still cook it! That is why sometimes people get sick when they go and eat to that nasty place! So I recommend you not to go eat in there nor work because you'll have a bad experience like me.

Like the old saying says, "never burn your bridges"

Depending on the type of job and the reason you are quitting, many people might need to return to a job which was previously quit. Or the job they are quitting the old one for might not be as secure, but they just wanted to try it out. Well could be lots of reason. Every job I have quit i didn't feel bad about. Except one, I worked for this really sweet lady and I knew it would be hard for her to find someone to train and work those hours, but even with my two week notice I felt bad. But I just couldn't stay because that job was a second job and I just didn't have time for it anymore. I worked there about 6 months longer thenI really wanted without saying anything to her because i felt soooo bad.

Lot's of reason....Choose one.

They don't want the boss to think they are a jerk. They know the boss will be left short handed and will be surprised.

Simply because they don't have balls enough to. Some people just can't speak up and say, " Look, this job is not working out and I'd like to quit."

To avoid confrontation.
To avoid hurting feelings (depending upon relationship).
To avoid feeling "guilty" for "rejecting" the boss/company.
