21, Born William Bonney he stabbed his father to death when he was 16 and was a killer thereafter.
He was reportedly left handed because of a photograph taken of him showing his gun on his left hip but early photographs were reversed, so he was actually right handed.
He was shot dead by Sheriff Pat Garrett who waited for him in his room, in darkness. When Billy the Kid opened the door he was sihouetted against the light in the hallway and it is reputed that Garrett never gave him a chance to draw.
Kinder versions of events suggest his father was a drunken bully and he was killed in a drunken rage as Bonney tried to protect his mother and had he given himself up may have got away with a manslaughter charge and a light sentence because of his age but instead he went on the run.
This may be true but being forced to 'protect' himself and never actually killing in cold blood is an unlikely version of events.
