Namie Amuro was the first J-Pop artist I listened to and I'm still a fan of hers today--she's really shown a remarkable resilience and adaptability in her career. Her new stuff is a tad bit imitative of American music, but still plenty enjoyable, and her old stuff is simply classic.

Hikaru Utada--well, it goes without saying. She single-handedly changed the sound and direction of J-Pop.

BoA--she may be the princess of K-Pop, but her Japanese stuff tends to be better produced and less derivative of American pop. I'm particularly enjoying her last two singles--one of my fave older BoA songs was "No. 1," so "Key of Heart" and that other recent song recaptures that effervescence.

Ringo Shiina/Tokyo Jihen - Ringo Shiina (who now records with her band under the band name Tokyo Jihen) is definitely an acquired taste--her voice tends to drive my friends nuts. But IMO she's a musical genius.

the brilliant green/Tommy February6/Tommy Heavenly6 - another demonstration of Japanese versatility--the same lead singer (Tomoko Kawase) in different stages of her career; in the retro-Brit rock band "the brilliant green," the retro-80's pop act "Tommy February6," and her hard-rocking persona "Tommy Heavenly6."

m-flo - rapper Verbal, DJ Taku, and (originally) vocalist Lisa are m-flo, one of the mainstays on my iPod. The music is just darn good. Lisa (whose voice is versatile and amazing--she's like the Swiss Army Knife of singers) left for a solo career a while back, so the remaining members of m-flo started partnering up with different stars of J-Pop and J-Urban to produce a great variety of combinations of music styles and vocals. If you haven't heard their stuff, you haven't heard J-Pop.
