The saddest for me is either daughters or perfect. They're both about fathers neglecting there children. I don't want to expound but i feel that i can relate.
There's also this foreign song about a man who had just found out that his childhood sweetheart had just died very tragically.
"huling el bimbo"

Hello, fellow older person...you're words brought tears to my eyes...songs about children/parents do this to us...have no children, but a fighter of child abuse...the songs that get to me are:
O Danny Boy - (Irish Traditional) {especially Roy Orbison singing}
Big League - Tom Cochrane
Hell Is For Children - Pat Benatar
and as mentioned above, Luca - Suzanne Vega...

I remember hearing Bohemian Rhapsody and feeling sad for this guy who is so alone....I guess it still does...
(Oh, the begining of the song not the waynes world bang your head part of it...)
the other would have to be Luka by Suzanne Vega that was big in the 80's......whew, what a flash back.

You should get 10 pts. for a great question. LOL (From a Mommy, who grew up in the same big hair era!!) I know the songs you mean.."Luka" by Suzanne Vega is another one along those lines.
I have a few that get to me. But if I start thinking about them I'll start crying. LOL!!!
(Does "Taps" count as a song? Everytime I hear it, I think of my husband's funeral. He was only 25. That gets me more than any 'regular' song!)

Little Miss Magic by Jimmy Buffet.
The song itself isn't sad. It's actually a very sweet song about his daughter when she was young, and the specialness of a father-daughter relationship.
However, since my dad passed away, I haven't been able to listen to it without crying hysterically.
My other is "Kite" by U2. Simply a beautiful song - but was written for Bono's father when he died of cancer - released about the same time my own father was diagnosed.

The Change by Garth Brooks...really touches me..here's why.
*sings*
One hand reaches out and pulls a lost soul from harm..while a thousand more go unspoken for and they say what good have you done, by saving just this one..its like whispering a prayer in the fury of a storm.......and i hear them saying..."Youll never change things and no matter what you do, its still the same thing"...its not the world that i am changing....i do this so...the world will know that it will not change ME.

Unchained Melody- Righteous Brothers!
then there is a patriotic song in my native tongue - which talks of soldiers blessing their countrymen and go off on a journey to the borders to protect their country in times of war and how that they can only become martyrs in defending their country! the song also proceeds to tell their countrymen to remember their fallen warriors and to imbibe their values of valor, pride, etc etc into our lives. This song brings tears to my eyes always and usually I end up crying by the buckets when the song ends!
Oh and there is another song an old one it's called 18 yellow roses
