The underpants gnomes have branched out and have gotten into the sock industry. Leave an offering at the beginning of every wash load and they should leave you alone.

Maybe because the socks fail to enter the laundry in the first place!
Two solutions:
Dont Wear Socks anymore or better yet...next time you do laundry...i suggest you stake out all night in front of the wash and dryer carrying a baseball bat and we'll see what these evil gnomes can get away with this time.....LOL!

Have you fed your dryer anything else? If not then what do you expect? Of course it isn't gnomes, silly person, they only steal underwear. I don't really think the sock industry has anything to do with this. They are too busy trying to steal each others corporate secrets. Hanes paid 10 million dollars last year for a tip on how to make humans look like fruit. But the real victims here are the dryers. They are neglected, and then chastised anytime they steal food. Can you make a difference? Will you help a hungry dryer?

Socks see their time in the laundry as an opportunity to separate from their mate. I solve this by buying multiple pairs of the same socks when I buy them. This way I can mix and match until they all disappear.

Heres a tip. Buy a mesh wash bag and put all your socks in there to wash. And belive me no evil gnome will steal your socks if he can not undo the knot on the bag.

Keep the side that is not lost. Sometimes, the lost one will reappear. It may be a good idea to buy many pairs of same socks so that if you lose one side, you can still wear them as you have many of the other side.

I read a great story once about how paper clips evolve into ink pens and they evolve into coat hangers and they evolve into socks and they .. so on and so on .. until eventually they evolve into abandoned bicycles which are collected by the thousands every year and disposed of. It explains what at times you have lots of these items and then suddenly you can't find one when you need it. It was quite amusing.

They fall back behind the 'machine's basket' and onto the bottom of the washer or dryer. If you opened it up you'd find a cache of socks there. Seriously.
