I know it fairly well, as I used to work across the water in Widnes for a year or so. Runcorn is in the Borough of Halton, about 30 minutes from John Lennon Airport in Liverpool. The industry around the area is mainly light industrial and the huge ICI chemical works. There are 2 parts to Runcorn - leafy suburbia where property prices are reasonable and crappy terraces nearer the River Mersey which aren't so desirable. See the BBC comedy show "2 Pints of Lager" for more guidance.

Runcorn is near a large petrol refinery and chemical industry.
Motorways go around the area on which drivers can and do easily get lost.
The river Mersey runs between Runcorn and the nearest town which is Widnes..
Depending which side of the river you want to get to, crossing the Widnes Runcorn bridge is a nightmare.
