'Religion' or as Carl Marx called it "the opium of the masses", was actually a political invention used to suppress any possible revolutions by the peasantry masses and to increases taxation, justify invasion of rich lands and create a moral structure in an eye for an eye justice driven population. It was considered at the time where there was little scientific understanding that religion, such as still observed today, would answer all questions such as the existence of night and day, life of earth's organisms, the existance of humans as a dominant species. When polytheism moved over for the creation of monotheism, religion took a stronger hold upon the population as there was little knowledge to be gained from the gods and goddesses that control the varying factors of nature (its conventient that at the time, to be a Pagan was considered a crime and punishable by death at the hands of either a Roman, Papal or Crusading soldier or a Priest). Under an omnipotent being the various world religions moved from the known to the unkown and extended its reach to cover philosohy, such as why we are here, unfortunatly no one knew at the time therefore 'God' created all. The masses at the time of religion were iliterate so they followed the literate, people unsure of anything needed a leader and the church took them under its so-called wing. However when literacy became mandatory for all from the age of 5, in the developing countries, with the introduction of public schooling, science was followed religiously for want of a beter term, whereas before it was considered blasphemous to follow scientific teaching, look at Da Vinci and the creation of the Masons. Now however with science answering the questions of life, religion isn't required for anything but moralistic teachings. It no longer is considered, in the majority of developed countries the best course of primary teachings of the philisophical questions that have been debated for an eternity. Thus we move from religions ideals of sheep herding and political domination to that of secular teachings. So yes religion is insane because it created a fabricated truth to further dominate the majority of people, not by physical dominance as it did not have the power but by exploitation of the forced ignorance of an uneducated mass.

Religion has frequently been used as a justification for killing, torture, dehumanization of the enemy.
So has "freedom" - witness George's Most Excellent Adventure In Iraq - among many others.
Does that make freedom bad?
Why then do you try to imply that religion is bad?
Mankind will always find an excuse for evil. It's the nature of the beast. Blaming religion for man's flaws is pretty simplistic.

No, I think the first big mistake was when one human started communicating with another. It has been all up hill since then. Animals don't work, don't own property and don't answer to anybody. They get up in morning have something to eat find a place to sleep and perhaps a little sex with another of their species. Same thing day in day out. Communication started the downfall of the human race.

Oh yeah. Religion is the leading cause of death when it comes to violence and war. Even WWII started because of religion. The Crusades went on for years and years. All because there are people that are so intolerant of other religions that they cannot even imagine living in the same world with a different belief. Sad.

I genuinely believe that relegion was invented by 1 or more people at some point in time for one of two reasons.
1/ To control the masses by fear or possibly
2/ To give weak people something to believe in and hold onto, when they didnt even have understanding of their own selves or surroundings. If you dont understand something, how much easier than to say, " ah, well it was the will of a God",
How easy to control people if you convince them that there is an all seeing all powerfull, revengefull god for example.

It was the selfish manipulation of religious scriptures by people who were more believers in themselves and their own greed than believers in God that made their so-called "religion" appear to be an insane reason to kill others. Their actions were not supported by any scripture in the bible by literal interpretation. These people took scriptures out of context in order to justify their own greed. So the answer is NO. Greed, envy and selfishness - not religion, was their motivation to kill, steal and destroy.

what??!!?? anyone can make excuses and try to find blame for what goes on the world. Um..lets see, if I'm correct, most of history has been led by men...wars, disputes, clashes, etc. ARE MEN the cause of all things wrong? Who made the first weapon? a woman? no...was it for religious purposes? who made the first sword? the first gun? rocket? missile? Stop saying religion, because religion doesn't require any thought or feeling from the heart, but men who are extremely territorial and would kill anyone to keep their land. Look at history, at the monstrous leaders from the past, um..like Hitler, oh...HES A MAN!!

No I believe the first insane step was taken when eve decided that she knew better than the one who created her. The second was taken when Adam agreed with her. The third was taken when they both thought they could hide it from the one who knows all.

yes and no. there was at one point a genuine interest in our origins, creation, etc. that point it was purely religion and philosophical. but soon afterwards, people began to realize that one could control others and brain wash them into believing something else. all for the sake of money, power and control. at that point is when religion became the biggest mistake ever inflicted upon humans.

and WAYYYYYYYYYYYY too many people have died over this phenom. too many

I believe the religion may be the single most important reason that human beings have not yet destroyed themselves.

You ask, "How many have died in the name of?". I ask how many would have died without it?
