~With luck, he'll get a regular dose of what put him there.

I'm guessing that to get 5 years at age 18, even in Texas, he's got quite a list of priors and has already had several breaks which he was too stupid to learn from. Chances are, this will be just his first stint behind the wall. When he makes parole, he'll blow it and be back. When he maxes out, he'll do a new crime and head back in. The time for rehabilitation has long since passed.

Although it is unlikely, he could actually use the time constructively, figure out that rules is rules and that he best start following them and do something with his life. Statistics say he won't.

Maybe someone will decide he's just a total waste of oxygen and taxpayer money and will slip in a shiv in the chow line after the gang rape in the shower. One can always hope.

~It's a little late to be asking this question. He should have thought of the consequences before he beat the crap out of "some poor guy."

Prison is not about rehabilitation as the Department of Corrections claims. It's about punishment and retaliation and then living under a microscrope while on parole.

By the time he leaves prison (which won't be in five years if that's his minimum sentence), he will experience punishment and retaliation.

Dem's da breaks when ya breaks da law.

This a list of things that are likely to happen in prison. (likely meaning more likely than just living in a suburban neighborhood.)

1. Rape of various kinds.
2. Severe beatings.
3. killed (gangs are rampant problems in prison.)
4. discover he is gay
5. Find god/religion
6. Raping of others.
7. using of drugs
8. Make friends.
9. Pick up some interesting skills or knowledge.
10. Become an expert at law if he uses the library.
11. Learn how to make bombs, gang hierarchy, loyalty etc etc.
12. Nothing.

It really all depends on who he makes friends with in Prison. How he talks, acts and looks.

I suggest being careful, stay away from the drug trade in jail as that's liable to start some problems with other inmates and guards.

There are lots of guys that went into prison bad and found out that inside they are just another sissy, there's ALWAYS some body, meaner, more ruthless and just badder than he thinks he is.
Is he going to a minimum security facility or medium, that
probably doesn't matter because the only prison system worst than Texas is Louisiana, all I can say is he needs to keep his mouth shut and his ears open and try to make it our in one piece and with his manhood intact. Its not going to matter to an 18 yr old new fish.
I bet the guy he beat up is still enjoying his freedom,so who's the smart one in this scenario? I don't mean to sound mean just factual...

He will in most cases, join a prison gang for protection. He will learn the art of drawing on handkerchiefs. If he is smart, I would suggest that he continue his education while in the system, stay out of trouble, and apply for office porter. It's an easy job.

If you're familiar with football terminology nand don't mind indirection...he could go in a tight end and come out a wide receiver. Prison is not a pleasant place.

He'll learn everything to be a full criminal when he comes out.
For the rest of his life it would have been better if someone had done to him what he did, to find out that it is not something to be repeated.

He can turn to a homosexual or somebody can beat the fu@k out of him.Plus he can think about his life and try to change his life before he gets out so he can be a better person.

It will happen again and it could happen to him, of course he won't be some poor guy.
When you say "Inside", are you talking about inside his rectum?
If you can't pay the dime, don't do the crime.
