Oh yeah, they sting.. and they sting hard. They are the meanest bee I've ever encountered. I guess thats what I get for throwing rocks at their nest.

Hornets are often (although wrongly) thought to be very aggressive and dangerous, and are much feared by some people. Hornets can actually be seen to slowly crawl backwards and eventually flee, rather than attacking, when approaching them. This can make it hard to remove hornets from indoors, if they happen to come in through an open window or door. Some people believe that three stings from the European hornet can kill an adult human, and that seven can kill a horse. While impressive due to their size, European hornets are in fact much less aggressive than some of their smaller relatives notably the yellowjackets, Vespula germanica and Vespula vulgaris, and their sting isn't any more dangerous. Unwarranted fear has often led to the destruction of nests, and the species is locally threatened. It benefits from legal protection in some countries, notably Germany.

Hornets are not harmless, however. They have a painful sting and can cause anaphylactic shock to persons with an allergy to wasp venom, a condition which can be fatal. While not aggressive when encountered far from the nest, workers will vigorously defend the nest if provoked.

Yes. Hornets can sting. They sting like hell. I am alergic to bee's and hornet's and all that stuff. Believe me they sting. I have to carry an epinephrine pen with me b/c if I get stung, I DIE.

They Sting...

They hurt....

And you will swell up at the sting spot...

And you will be in pain a bit...

And if your allergic, (start to swell, or feel every hair on your body itch, or its hard to breathe after you get stung in a few minutes, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY!!

You will only have a short time to get to the hospital before your airway starts to close up. But, they can give you a benedryll shot, and that will relieve the symptoms...

I wish you well..

Oh, yes they can...and unlike bees, their stingers are not barbed, so one hornet can sting many times
