I Think That DJ Should Win That MVP Because He Go's Out And Plays His Butt Off Everyday. But We All Know That How Many Home runs You Put Up Is More Important Then How You Go Out And Play THE GAME. Making Great Plays On And Off The Field Like Jeter Does Every Game He Plays In. Unlike Oritz Who Only Get Up When He Plays DH. That Sad That The MVP Is Going To Oritz Because Of How Many Home runs He Got This Year. But Whatever Us Yankees Fans Will Be Alright With That. Boston Can Have There MVP. All We Care About Is Winning The World Series This Year For The 27th Time. GOOOOO Yankees.

Yes.

Jeter plays shortstop, a premium postion, the quarterback of the defense. He can go 0 for 4 and still contribute on the field. David Ortiz is not a complete player, he's a DH, he hits, then sits. He can go 0 for 4, and has nothing else to contribute. Don't give me this "Ortiz is great in the clubhouse" crap. I'm not sure that writers look at that too much when they vote.

Also, from here, it doesn't look like Ortiz made much of a difference last weekend when the Red Sox lost 5 in a row! It looks to me like Varitek is the glue who holds the Red Sox together, doesn't it?

The Yankees were battered earlier in the year, but were held together by DEREK JETER. He does not have Ortiz's power numbers, but he is hitting around .340, has close to 30 steals, and is playing a great shortstop. Most importantly, THE YANKEES ARE IN FIRST PLACE, NOT THE RED SOX. If Boston does not even make the playoffs, it won't matter what Ortiz does.

I think this is the year that a pitcher should win the award.

You can't give the MVP to a DH... and all the best offensive players this year are DHs (Haffner, Thome, Ortiz).

However, Jeter's stats are largely a product of the lineup he's in. He's the most valuable Yankee this year... the question is does that justify him as the most valuable player in the league?

I'd strongly consider pulling a Co-MVP and giving it to Justin Verlander and Kenny Rogers in the AL. It'd be a totally outside the box thing to do, but none of the offensive players are really deserving this year.

David Ortiz deserves to be MVP this year but unfortunately if the Sox do not make the playoffs then Jeter probably will. Thats just how it goes in baseball, even if the best player is on a losing team. You may say he's not the most "valuable" player. Well someone who is the best player in the league is certainly "valuable" to his team even if they don't make the playoffs.

Destobrave you are an idiot. how can you say that if you replaced Ortiz with an average 1B/DH you wouldn't have that big of a drop off? That is just stupid. The sox have been carried by Ortiz through many of the games, and to think that the difference between Ortiz and someone average is small is ridiculous.

While Big Papi should, I think this will turn into a replay of last year, only with a Jeter-Ortiz debate. Since sportswriters are so infatuated with the Yankees, they will probably give it to Jeter, with their argument based on the fact he is on the field every day. I think they blew the call last year, especially with A-Rod's dismal performance in the play-offs (I know the play-offs don't count for voting). So, maybe, hindsight will give them a better perspective and they will reward the man who truly has been the MVP for two years now.

I dont think he will but he should he is the captain the backbone and has been with the Yankees for his whole career and it's about time hes got an mvp. Also only complete players should get MVP David Ortiz gets a day off every time he "plays". You should have to be an athelete to be MVP. Plus Ortiz as good a clutch hitter as he is he is only batting .285 compared to Jeter's .336 average.

Jeter is a worthy candidate because he plays the field. David Ortiz is urguably the best clutch hitter in the American League, but shouldn't be considered, because he doesn't play the field. If they're gonna award a DH an MVP, they should also take a serious look at closers for the same award, MVP. Who is more deserving of MVP status than Mariano Rivera?

Although I am a Yankee fan, I have to say there is really no shot at that happening. It's not that he hasn't had a great season but it's just that there is someone else in the AL by the name of David Ortiz. Big Papi will win MVP. He didn't get it last year but this year with A-Rod having a horrible year and no one really that close to him. It's time for the first DH to win MVP.

No chance Jeter wins an MVP... MVP relies to much on the power hitting in recent years because of the homerun crazed fans. Abreu is the cause for the turn around in New York, not Jeter

I think he has a legitimate shot. The thing is that if you take Ortiz and replace him with an average 1B/DH, you don't have as big a dropoff as if you replace Jeter with an average SS. This year, Jeter is certainly playing well.

I am not a Jeter fan. Not so much because he isn't a great player, but because he has a following of people who believe he has some Zen-like quality to "come through" when it counts. I don't believe in clutch, and I believe it always counts, so it gets annoying.
