Ophthalmology: Is it safe to watch tv in the dark?
"Our mothers always used to say that it's bad for your eyes to watch TV in the dark. Is there any truth to this? Can there be retinal damage?" wonders DAN EZEKIEL, MD, of Vancouver, BC.
There's no evidence to suggest that watching television in low-light surroundings increases the possibility of ocular damage.

Movie screens are projections of light cast upon a white screen. TV is a bunch of pixels and light shining at you. It's like the difference between shining a flashlight away from you and shining it in your eyes.

I don't think so. I watch TV without light in the room...sometime with a dull light...it will give the effect of watching in a Theater.

Its not really harmful, that is pretty much a myth. It can cause some eye strain but, believe it or not, some eye strain is actually good for you. Eye strain is caused by the muscles that focus your cornea being over worked but they, like any other muscle, will grow stronger as they are exercised.

because the television is a light source, it emits light waves. A movie is simply a reflection, you are not staring directly into the light source

It's not harmful in that it will create permanent damage. It just causes temporary eye strain.

it is so because while watching a movie in dark there is no radiation emission by the screen as it is the projection that you see, but TV Emmit radiations that are harmful to your eyes in dark because your retina opens wide and all the radiation enters your eyes directly. its like watching a solar eclipse.
