I know many will say both, but I want to know one or the other. They are both important, but if you had to take one part out, which would it be?

Music is much more important because it creates the atmosphere of the song. Lyrics (which I would consider psrt of the music) is just one layer. The bass, drums, and harmony must all come together before a song can exist. Once a foundation is laid then the lyrics are installed. Without music there are no lyrics.

I'd take the lyrics out. Cause I listen to a lot of songs where the lyrics really suck but I love the beat/music so I still listen to it. So many artist come out with the most retardest lyrics talkin about some shoes, or just repeating the same thing over and over and the only reason it sells is because of the music.

Both are important, I know you said that but I think that people seem to ignore the lyrics if there is really good music accompaniment or a really nice beat. I think that is why so many of today's artist sell records because their studio engineers/technicians make okay music. Singers today do not have to be vocally gifted as long as their music is really good. If they took the music away, I think people would start to notice how truly horrible the lyrics are.

Lyrics definitely, cause they help you get through life. Some songs the lyrics have so much meaning that it influences some or helps them feel better. Or in some cases just makes some people want to kill themselves. A big shame is that many artists write their own lyrics, but only have one hit. Whereas Britney Spears, Mariah Carey, Justin Timberlake, etc are a huge success but don't write their own lyrics. They pay someone else to do it for them.

Based on the ridiculous lyrics of today's songs, I would say music is more important. Listen to the lyrics of any "Dirty South" rap song (also "crunk" music), and you'll quickly see people aren't picking up these tracks based on the lyrics. At least I hope not.

The lyrics because to me if a song does not have meaning, they might as well just have music and no words. Lyrics is the thing that makes you think and dream.

The music. That's why it's called: "listening to music", not "listening to lyrics" or "hearing poetry". I mean, the lyrics could be about some kind of pressed rat and warthog who have to close their small buisness, or some kid with disabilities ranging from being deaf and dumb to being blind, but who can still play a mean pinball for all I care, as long as there is good musicianship, nice chord structuring and asskickular solos to back it up. That's why my favorite band is Cream.

Well...if you took the music out - it would just be poetry. But, without the lyrics...it's still a song, and music as in various classical music. So, I'd say the music is more important to a song.

Lyrics are the most important. But it really needs music to make it all work.
