It's fine to leave your computer on and turn your monitor off, but I would suggest instead setting power options to save energy...
Open your control panel and choose power-options, these settings can automatically turn off your monitor after a specific time being idle, and you can set your system to go on 'standby' after a certain # of minutes, this will keep your hard drive on and put it and your monitor in "sleep mode" which uses less power, it's also less harsh on your hard-drive, your computer components won't overheat if you set these power settings.
Best Wishes

Theres an urban myth that you should leave your pc on at all times, but thats not the case. Its better to switch it off when you;re not using it.
It doesn't shorten its life span to switch it off, it uses more electricity when its on than powering up, and it gives Windows a chance to clear out the temporary files.
If you have a Broadband (always on) internet connection, you should physically disconnect the pc while you're not using the internet, as it cuts down the chances of being hacked.

It's OK to leave your computer on 24/7 as long as you have a surge switch, but then anyone running a computer should have a surge switch or sooner or later your pay the price if you don't.

Nope. The only machines that should be left of permanatly are servers.
Try turning off you machine once in a while otherwise it could be at risk to overheating and exploding which would leave to a fire and Il let you imagine the rest.

If you are going to leave the machine idle for more than 30mts, better shut that down. You can save some electricity.
In security point of view, it safer to shut down, if the machine is going to be left unattended and connected to internet. Some cracks can crack into a system.

turn it off when not in use
that way you save even more energy
only if you are going to leave for 1 hr or more
if you right click desktop / properties / screensaver tab / power
you can turn off moniter and hard disk as well as put system into standby mode. all these will help save energy
note:- these are idle times before they act
