I have a motherboard compatible with AMD Athlon 64 and AMD Athlon 64 FX processors. So, am I right in thinking an AMD Athlon 64 X2 processor wouldn't function?

If it is socket 939, (which i'm assuming it is) It WILL take the Athlon X2 but it may need a bios flash.

THe big thing to look at is whether the CPU and motherboard have the same socket type. With an AMD combo, you could be using any number of socket types: A, 939, etc.

Both pieces of equipment should have documentation with them somewhere that says what kind of socket they are. If not, you can check on the motherboard itself where the CPU plugs in.

It maybe, I'm currently running an FX-60 on Asus A8N-SLI which says it only supports the FX and 64, but the dual core FX 60 works fine on it. But, to be safe and for the best answer, I'd try to gather information and or contact the manufacturer.

The X2 is a different socket type (999?) so I don't think the processor will even -fit- let alone function.
