Does a composer wake up with a tune in his head and think what do to with it, or does he tell himself that he needs a good tune for whatever, and then proceeds to think of one?

I've done both, but then again, I'm not a very good songwriter.

For me, it depends.
There have been songs I wrote lyrics to AFTER I wrote the music.
And then just the opposite.
I do find it more difficult to write music AFTER the words, though.
Seems the music is always there, floating.

BTW - if you are looking for some ideas, try this:
Play your guitar (piano, whatever) and record it while you hum various melody lines...toss in some non-word vowels or other sounds.
Play it back a few days later and I bet you'll come up with some interesting words based on what you THOUGHT you were saying.

It differs. Some people just hum random tunes, some write lyrics or have an idea and try and write a tune to go with it.

It works both ways, but I have found the tunes that just come to me are better than the forced ones.

I think s/he probably has a tune come, then maybe thinks of suitable words to fit the mood. I write fantastic songs in my dreams..........but I can't remember them when I wake up.

If it is supposed to couple with another piece of art such as a movie or a play, then they use the script for inspiration. If not its most likely just an expression of something else.

In my case, the tune, but many others write lyrics then the melody. What ever floats your boat, I guess.
