Each state as well as each fire department has different rules. Most larger departments, which have all paid personnel, run an academy. When you get out of their academy, you are certified to their standards which consists of in, North Carolina, Level I & II Firefighter, EMT, and Basic Pump Operations. If they do not have an academy, you can attend weekend fire schools, which takes longer, or technical community colleges will run the course. My recommendation is to call the department that you are interested in and ask. If you want to volunteer, just go to your local department and get an application. Some volunteer departments have a waiting list, but you can usually get on pretty fast. Good Luck!! It's a great career which is also very rewarding!!! Women love firefighters... it's the sexiest profession! Not that thats the reason to apply, but it's just a heroic career. Most men are insanely jealous of firefighters though!

You usually start at a fire... And then you... Um... You fight it... Engage in fisticuffs, so to speak.
