Plug in a USB 2.0,
if you are using XP, you will get a thing saying "This device can run faster!" or something..
Then you are using 1.1
best suggestoin: plug in an iPod. It's backwards compatabile to 1.1 so you can plug it in and run that test.

most items require 2.0 though if you use windows xp it will tell you when your using usb 1.1, a message like this appear on the taskbar:
"This will run faster if you connect this to a USB 2.0 port"
not exact words but close to them. but if the board was designed around the time windows 98 was made, expect 1.0 or 1.1 to be the version.

5 Years old? Most likely 1.1. You can go into Device Manager and click on Universal Serial Bus Controller and see if it says 2.0. IF it doesn't, then it's most likely 1.1

Go to http://belarc.com and download the Belarc Advisor (free). Run it and it will create a detailed report of all the hardware, software, patches, network info, etc. on your PC. Will tell you whether you have USB 1.1 or 2.0.
If the PC is more than two years old, it will be USB 1.1.

I'm not sure if that information is stored in your computer...I just checked system settings and couldn't find it. That age though, it is probably 1.1
A quick and easy test: if you have a USB flash memory stick, plug it in. If it is an older port, it will tell you that the transfer rates will be low and the device might not work properly.
Might be easier than buying an external drive because they might not let you return it once opened.

If its 5 years old chances are its 1.1. You can however buy a pci usb 2.0 card and install it.

Plug in a USB 2.0 device. If it works, you have USB 2.0. If not, you have USB 1.1.
