Move anything fragile or irreplacable first yourself.
When the movers come, number and inventory those boxes. Make sure there's someone watching them get out of the house and on the truck. (If you're in an apartment, stuff can and does get dragged into other apartments while the boxes sit.)
Pick the movers carefully, some of them are outright terrible.
Might be cheaper to dump as much as you can & buy stuff later. I have no problem getting stuff at goodwill or salvation army.
Check out shipping via ups. Might end up cheaper.

I just completed my 23rd (yes, that is right) move and will move for the 24th time in a few months. Begin by asking around to see what moving companies your friends/aquaintances have used. If no one has any info, talk to real estate agents to see who they like. As a last resort, call up or look online at info on movers at the BBB. There are a lot of scammers out there, so be sure to get a company that has been in business at least 5 years and has a track record with the BBB or whom you have gotten personal information on from someone who has used their services. Be sure to get estimates from at least 4 movers so you can compare their offerings and ask about insurance for any damages they may cause, and what that costs and what it covers.
As for preparation, this is what we do and it makes it really easy when we have to unpack and shortens the time the movers stay (i..e, drops costs). First, number each box AND make a list of the contents and the box number. Also, label the room the movers should put the box in at the new house. For example, Box 1/ plates and cups/kitchen. The box itself just has 1 and KITCHEN on all 4 sides of it.
May sound tedioius, but with this system you will know which box your necessary items are in and which boxes you can wait to unpack. Also, this system helps you track all of your possessions, so you know if the movers have picked up and delivered all of your stuff.

I made a major move, two hours away from my home in Nov '04, and made the mistake of selling my furniture, thinking it would be too much of a hassle to move it, and I'd be able to afford furniture in no time. It was Feb 06 before I could afford a couch. I just had a ratty 2piece loveseat that was an embarrassment.
That is the best advice I can give you is don' t sell or get rid of anything thinking it will be easy to replace. And use a moving service.

Get your boxes now, not too big, ones that are easy to carry when full. start packing things right away that you don't use and what you can do with out so that on moving day everything is in a box and packed by you. Mark them well with a big bold marker saying what room or contents so you will know what you want to unpack first at your new place.
The best is to rent a truck and rent the pads to protect your furniture. secure everything in the truck anything that can rock back and forth can slice a hole in something else. I feel like I could go on forever.

I have heard horror stories about moving companies.Even ones that were checked out first. You should move anything that is valuable or means a lot to you by yourself.Let moving companies move your furniture not anything glass or valuable like jewelry.Even though they say they are insured, they won't cover it.You would do better if you rented a truck, hired a few strong neighborhood college boys and supervised it yourself.Have a yard sale first, get rid of anything you don't want to take.Make a fresh start for a new home.Good Luck!

Get some 3x5 index cards. As you pack items into boxes write down what you are putting into the box on a card. Tape the card to the box. Now you will know what is inside all of the boxes and won't have to go digging through them to look for things.
If you want to take this a step farther you can make two cards and number all of the boxes as you go. Tape one card to the box and file the other. Then you will have a record of all of the boxes and their contents in a file.
Add more details to your question if this is not what you wanted to know. I wasnt certain what you really needed to know about moving.

If your getting a van, and moving yourself, have lots of friends to help you. (You can get a moving van for 40 bucks or about that, and milage, which is cheaper than a moving company).
Have a lot of boxes, and as you pack them, label them!
(NO, DONT PACK AND REUSE BOXES AS YOUR FRIENDS BRING THEM BACK, OR, YOU MAY NOT "HAVE" FRIENDS FOR THE NEXT MOVE!!)...
Thats the WORST way to move! (I have done that many times wih friends and family and SWORE I would never move them again!).
Get boxes from stores (ask them when they toss them out, on what days so you can get them...also, beware of roaches! check each box you get, so you dont get the critters).
Label each box as to which room it goes into, so those who are putting it there, will know.
For glass ware, get lots of old newspapers so that you can wrap each of them individually!
Also, put layers between glass plates, so you dont break them. Take out ALL GLASS that are in shelving and all that, because it WILL get broke! You can replace them later...
Its going to be hectic, so have a good day, and bring lots of soda, or anything to keep everyone hydrated..NO BEER OR ALCOHOL!!
Thats all you need, to lose your "stuff" and some one to crash a truck, (if you have some one drive the van you rented, or some one who has helped you by volunteering thier services and vehicles).
I wish you well..
Jesse

closet stuff first, also try packing for you and your son like you were going on vacation-what clothes do you need, what things on a daily basis..then separate that stuff and pack everything else. that saves you the time when you discover " crap I need that NOW" feeling-because its in the bag! ...your family is making a huge sacrifice and keeping us safe...thanks to you and your guy. good luck on your move!
