Ronald Reagan was a great President for several reasons but the main one was that he had an unflappable faith in America and its citizenry that they would prevail over any and everything by following basic moral principles. He also believed that if you could communicate with the Eastern Bloc you could convince them and from day 1 of his presidency he endeavored to do just that. No he did not win the cold war by himself but he was one of the key figures along with Gorbachev and others. But, perhaps his greatest strength was that he did not govern by polls and he did not take his party affiliation personally, witness that one of his best friends was Tip O’Neil a polar opposite politically if ever there was one. He was also a fantastic communicator a trait he had in common with another recent and also good president, Bill Clinton. There are a number of books that will provide much more in depth information than I can but one I really like is, Reagan’s War, by Peter Schweizer.

Raygun was great. He had early onset Alzheimer's when he took the oath of office in 1980.

Most presidents try to get involved in the business of running the Government. But Raygun left the daily chores to Joan Quigley. She handled all the little things like Foreign Affairs. And Oliver North and GHW Bush handled trading WMD's to Saddam.

Those were good years for the Savings and Loan business. Run away interest rates, off the chart inflation. My favorite part of the Raygin years was the Resolution Trust that was set up for tax payers to pay for all the Savings and Loan debt.

I was still on the young end to remember him as president but from what I can remember he made more of an impact than these idiots that are in presidency right now.
He did his job with respect and genuine concern for everyone and everything around him.

Ronald Reagan is the reason the cold war ended. We now have the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, which reduces the # of nukes the US and Russia has. Plus he got shot and was tough enough to live on.

He was a much better puppet for the Neocons than either of the Bushes. The fact that he was mentally checked out for most of his second term demonstrates this. "Just read the prompter Mr. President and you can have another banana."

He was the great communicator. Didn't take sh*t from anyone....he was just likable. He started out as an actor, so people knew him as a non-political person too.
