The first motel was in San Luis Obispo in California. The word was derived because they are designed to drive up to and you park near your room. They're generally more cheap and cheerful than a hotel, usually near major road intersections or on the edges of town. USA has Motel 6 chain.

To get to your room in a motel, you just unlock an outside door with a key and walk right in. To get to your room in a hotel, you first have to go inside, walk through the lobby, and down a hall to your room.
