the truck is a 2001 dodge 4x4 QC 5.2 auto tranny I have not felt the problem unde 60 mph yet does it in or out of cruise only notice it going down highyway it has 80,000 miles

I know that the standard tachs will do that, even the speedo. try hooking up after market tach. if it surges try mass airflow sensor throotle sensor, and speed sensor.
I never trust mechanics and dealers.

if it jumps up 200 rpm and stays there until you go below 60 mph, i would say that its normal. If it fluctuates then id say ask click and clack. the guys on cartalk

Okay, best thing to do...go to a mechanic. I can't tell you how many times I have asked my mechanically inclined friends about a problem and have them tell me something totally different from what the real problem was. It's best to just have someone who is trained to look at it and do a thorough inspection.

Perhaps what you are noticing is the torque converter clutch cycling. It is designed to cycle on & off depending on road conditions, and this is normal. When the converter clutch cycles on, you will see a drop in RPM's and when it cycles off, you will notice a slight increse in RPM's. The converter clutch is designed for fuel efficency, so when you demand power/torque, it will cycle off, and when you cruise, it will cycle on....Very normal
