Here is how you track it
Day 1 is the first day of menstruation
Then depending on how long your cycle last you count the days.Usually it is 3 to 4 days (some woman have shorter or longer) So for example I will use a four day cycle
Day 2 3 4 Cycle
Day 5 6 7 are your infertile days. You have 3 days after your period that you are not fertile.
Day 8 through 16 would be your fertile time.
Day 13 would be your peak day (most likely your actual ovulation day) five days into your fertile period.
You are only fertile for twelve to twenty four hours, but the best sperm can live for 3 days. Meaning that you can have sex three days before your ovulation and still become pregnant.

Women that have regular 28 day cycles usually ovulate about 14 days after the start of their period so they are fertile from about 3 days before ovulation through 3 days after ovulation. It is difficult to predict ovulation and fertile days for women with irregular periods. But women with irregular cycles can see a doctor or use an ovulation detector kit. Fertile days are always a few days before through a few days after ovulation.

its NOT a couple of days before and after your period at all! Its a couple either side of ovulation! You need to either buy an ovulation detector kit available at a pharmacy (here anyway) Or start an ovulation calander. Ovulation usually occurs 14 days after the beginning of your last period.

Since this is posted in " Trying to Conceive" my advice is to go to Walgreen's and pick up an ovulation test kit.

check out some options here:
