Greyhound will take you across the border. They actually have divisions in the US, Canada and Mexico.

There are two bus services that go to Montreal from New York:

Greyhound and Adirondack , the service is pool, so it doesn't matter which ticket you have .
You pick up the bus , at the Central Bus Station , 8TH /42ND STreet.. There are buses about every three hours.
I would make sure bring food and drinks with you. The bus stops at Albany, for 45 minutes, the selection of food is bad. The journey takes between 8 to 9 hours, depending, on traffic, weather and border crossing.
Bring reading matter as well.

Don't take the train, I TOOK IT ONCE AND THE JOURNEY TOOK 12 HOURS!

Just visit the greyhound site for more info: http://www.greyhound.ca/ they have a 1 800 number too which might be easier. You should be able to purchase a ticket directly to either Montreal or Toronto.

Also, what about taking the train? You can take an Amtrak train from NY to Montreal and then if you want to go to any other city you would take a Via Rail train. Having taken buses many a time, I think a train would be a nice change of scenery.

http://www.amtrak.com/ (or call 1 800 USA RAIL (1 800 872-7245))

The route you would take would be the "Adirondack":
