It really depends on the person. I will not deny that getting a tattoo hurts. On my first I was fighting to hold myself still and not shake from the pain. On the second, I had to take several breaks. Generally I have a high pain threshhold, but not with tattoos. During the tattooing process is the worst of the pain. Afterwards, for me, it's not that bad, kind of like a sunburn which is a tolerable pain for me. Plus your endorphins kick in with the pleasure of having the new tattoo.

On others it's different. One female friend was just sitting and smiling through the whole thing like she was in a hair salon. And it was her first tatoo. My ex said that for him, it hurt in the beginning, but then his endorphins would kick in and it was a somewhat pleasurable experience. Mine hurt like crazy, but I still got them.

Heck, most of the time me and my friends talk about tats to the uninked, we usually tell them that it does hurt to varying degrees, but it depends on the person. We don't tell people that it doesn't hurt all that much.

I would imagine that one of the reasons others say that tats don't hurt all that much is so that someone who is getting one for the first time doesn't OVER expect a lot of pain. You know how when people over hype something, you go in expecting to get blown away by the awesomeness and are severely underwhelmed by the mediocrity? Or the reverse, where it's the worst thing ever and so horrible and bad and you think it's at least ok? Similar principle. If you go in expecting horrifyingly excruciating pain, you will get tense and you will probably feel more pain than you normally would if you went in expecting only minor discomfort.

Some people have a higher pain threshold and tolerance than others, which means that they don't think tattoos hurt, especially if they have multiple tattoos already. Also, some people enjoy the small amount of pain they experience in getting a tattoo, regarding it as a positive experience rather than negative. It's all in how you interpret the sensation of the needle, really...I kind of enjoyed mine. :)

I have a couple and I think it really depends on your pain threshold. It didn't bother me in the least. Kinda felt like when your hand goes to sleep - that numb feeling. Then again, I had my son 9 years ago without any drugs and while it wasn't a walk in the park - it wasn't THAT bad.

Some people have a higher tolerance for pain and depending on where you get a tattoo, it can be painful in certain places on the body.

relies upon specially on your soreness tolerance, or your would desire to no longer look "wimpy" infront of your human beings. anyplace with thinner epidermis hurts. the indoors wrist is very painful, yet in basic terms the bone section on the authentic of the wrist is painful. i does not recommend it as a usual tattoo, yet for an experienced tattoo receiver it would twinge somewhat.

OR ...

Maybe they just lie to make themselves appear tougher than they really are. Many people do that. They want others to look up to them so that they pretend to have skills, knowledge and attributes they don't have.

We used to call them posers, fakes, bull sh***ers, etc.

i think it's so they appear to look all tough because they got one. but when their 90 years old they will regret ever getting one in the first place.
