I drive a Volvo 2001 S40. This morning I dropped my son off at the daycare, when I got back in the car and turn the key to start it nothing at all happened. The engine didn't even turn over. So I took the key out and put it back in to try again. When I tried to turn it this time some of the lights on the dash thingy lit up, but they were flickering and I could here a strange clicking sound, but the engine still didn't start. This all seemed strange to me considering I was just driving it fine 5 minutes prior. The car is now stranded and I don't know what to do. I don't know anything about cars so hopefully my wording is understandable. I am thinking it may be the battery but I really don't know. Can anyone help me?

Yes, your battery is dead. It could be the alternator but chances are you would have noticed other things. It is most likely just your battery. The guy above me is an absolute idiot. There is nothing wrong with your ignition switch.

It could be your battery, but I am inclined to believe your alternator is no longer working. When the car is running, it runs off the alternator, which also charges the battery. However, if the alternator isn't working or not working properly, it isn't charging the battery and the battery is what is used to start the car. You will probably have to get a new one installed, it's not a particularly difficult process, I would check on-line to see what the cost of it would be. When looking, you must know, model, make, year, engine size of your car to be sure you check the right one. Knowing the cost of the part may save you from getting ripped off at the garage. It shouldn't take any longer than an hour to replace it, if they charge for longer than that, your getting hosed. Hope this helps.

the battery is dead. Get someone to jump start the car, and then go have the battery checked. Make sure it isn't something simple as a light left on the entire night. Sometimes the battery is still good, but the alternator is not charging it properly. Good luck.

Try this...the same thing happen to my co-worker (she called her Dealership) ...lets see if I can explain this...

*While the key is in the ignition, place you foot on the break, and move your automatic shifter from "park" all the way to the bottom...which would be the "1" and then move it all the way to the top. (don't stop at each shift, do it quickly) Then turn the key, your car should start.

Basically your restarting your car, sometimes this occurs when you don't put your car in park correctly.

I hope this help! :)

Sounds like the ignition switch broke. It happens. Have it checked. In the worst case, you'll have to have the ignition switch replaced, which means you'll get a new key.
