1. Windows® XP Media Center Edition 2005, add $ 26
.. no xp-home, no xp-pro .. simple

Depending upon you use of the laptop you could spend less. Decide what applications you are going to use the laptop for. If it is the typical research on the web, typing papers, sending e-mail, etc., then you might even consider refurbished laptops. Think about the features that matter ... size, weight, battery life, typing, etc. Once you have figured it out then IBM and Toshiba make the best laptops. HP has improved it's image over the last year or so with their new CEO and Dell sell lots of laptops.

If the budget does not matter then you can buy very nice new for $1000. Compare IBM and Toshiba laptops with similar feature and perhaps and HP. If you are budget conscious then search google for "refurbished laptops" and check out the vendors that come up.

I got a Toshiba A105-4164 a few weeks ago and it's excellent. It has a 15.4-inch screen with the wide 16:9 aspect ratio, an 80 GB hard drive, 1 GB of RAM and a DVD burner. For a widescreen laptop, it has a low weight of 6.2 pounds. (Weight is important if you will be carrying it around.) It also has four USB ports, which is the most I've seen on any laptop. It has built-in wireless capability, which has worked perfectly so far.

You will want an external mouse for most work on it, as the built-in touchpad is touchy and not as convenient as a mouse. I paid $700 for this Toshiba at Office Depot.

Well, personally Dell has horrendous tech support that can hardly speak English. I would go with Hewlett Packard or Compaq (same company really). You can spec a Windows Vista Premium Capable computer with 1gig of RAM and a Dual Core 64Bit AMD Turion 64 X2 processor for just about $1K

Go with a Dell, and remember what you do and don't need. Lots of RAM (atleast 1GB.) Look at the Inspirion E1705 Single Core with 1GB of shared RAM, will work wonders.

Dell notebooks are really nice. With $1000 bucks you can customize your own laptop to fit your needs.
