It is in essence a good question and Knowitall has it right. Islam has to modify/reform its doctrine so that it no longer generates shadowy violent outriders ('terrorists'). It may take decades but western civilisation has to sustain its pressure on the Islamic world until the truth seeps in to the mass of ordinary Muslims that something needs changing about the way Islam operates. Perhaps we can take comfort from the way communism another failing and expansionist system eventually withered under pressure.

The answer is rather obvious. These so-called moderate muslims don't like it when they are referred to as Islamic-Fascists but they do like it when their brethren blow up builidings and kill people. And it's sad, because, in the end, they are the ones that are going to pay the price. So far, we have handled the situation with kid gloves, trying to appeal to more reasonable muslims to stand up and be heard (with little or not results) at the same time we're killing the jihadists. But what do you suppose would have been the reaction if this latest terror attempt had been successful? Or the next one? Will we any longer have the luxury of being so picky in who we go after? If these idiots think we are going to sit back and allow them to kill two or three or a hundred thousand of us every few years without doing anything about it, they're living in a world I'm not familiar with (duh). If it's fear that keeps them from speaking out, well, I'll just say this. A bunch of cave dwellers whose calendar stopped advancing about six hundred years ago is the last thing you should be afraid of. If you truly do not believe in what's happening in the muslim world, you best start saying so. loudly.

That is so ignorant! And no I am not a Muslim! How can you ask such a thing?
Islamic Fascists is found to be a racist comment that is why they are offended...Duhhhhh!
And what on Earth would make you think that ALL of any kind of people think the same way? I'm a Christian but I don't practice what Catholics or LDS Christians believe. It doesn't mean that I can't see where they are coming from, it just means that I am a Baptist, and follow that line of thinking.
Wouldn't you therefore conclude that not every Muslim agrees with extemist views then?
I'm sure that there are several people who can understand why people do what they do...it doesnt make them agree....just like I am trying to understand why you would ask such a short sighted question....but it doesn't make me agree with you now does it?

well, first of all, let us not stereotype. "muslims' as any other community are a diverse group, and there are deep schisms and debates within islam about the nature of politics, jihad, women's rights. many muslims i know think terrorists are fascists who believe in a literal interpretation of the religion's several contested facets. many more believe blowing up buildings is murder. but had it not been primarily for american support for repressive dicatorships in their countries (Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan....), they would be more outspoken. Many are but they pay a high price (arrests, illegal detentions, torture) and the champions of "democracy" and liberty forget to even squeek when dictators torture their people. unless of course you are a country that has fallen out of favor with the "international community" like Iraq, mind you, another former US ally. Then tyranny becomes a problem to be handled by slaughtering innocent civilians with destructive weaponry. when saddam gased his own people, where was the united states?
Like all religions, to put it simply, Islam has inherent flaws. The problem is terrorism is as political as it is religious. In a recent study the University of Chicago professor Robert Pape has shown the most suicide terrorism is politically motivated against foreign occupiers of homelands. lest we forget, these "fascists" were trained by the CIA to fight the USSR in Afghanistan and funded for more than a decade through its proxy army in Pakistan. So lets see things in context.
