Please give me an estimate. I searched previous questions andanswers and they were mostly "who cares?" I'm not going to rob you or anything. Answer only if you're over the age of 18, please. I'm a poor college student, and I want to compare myself to adults in the real-world, and especially college students. How much do you spend per month on food (for yourself only please)? I want to live cheap. If my checking account is lower than the average college student, I will live off of samples at the grocery store.

Thanks!!

I guess I'm very surprised with the answers I've been getting. This is an ONLINE site! I'm not asking anyone in person. I don't know anyone on this site. How is that being impolite? I don't ask people this face to face...my "people skills" are fine. Maybe it's because most people posting in this section are older or something...

Just paid my rent. I only have about $65 in my account until the 31 this month. As for food, I was brought up with 6 (sometimes 8) people living in my house (lived with my Grandmother, her mother, my Mom, brother, cousin and Aunt) and we used to buy meats in bulk, because you save money.
Now that I live alone, I still buy food in bulk because I have to. Have to save money.
I spend about $50. That includes foods in bulk in chicken, fish, pork, whatever. And then miscellaneous stuff. I do go to a lot of different supermarkets to find a great deal (ex. Food town for milk, half a gallon, always $2., Extra Supermarket for onions, potatoes, peppers., etc.) I go to 4 different supermarkets just to save money. That is what you have to do. You have to get those Sunday's coupons and check out all of the deals. Do not know where you live, but, in Jersey, I have the above mention as well as Path Mark and Shop Rite that always have a good deal.
So, cut the pons, check out all the sales and go for it! I have saved ALOT of money on doing that.

I don't think that you should use other people's checking account balances and grocvery spending as a decision maker on whether or not you should save money. If there's room for you to save more money and spend less on groceries then do it, regardless of whether people have $1 or $1 million or eat out of garbage cans.

I have less than $200 in in checking by the way if it makes you feel better and I spend a minimum amount on food and pretty much everything else with the exception of coffee and tea.

Hey there. Well I am a college student and I work full time, I get paid every two weeks. I currently have $200 in my checking and I spend about $100 a month on food (take out) and groceries. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask me. I know how you feel!

this is really a question that you will most assuredly get negative reactions to. it's along the lines of asking a woman how much she weighs. personal finance is a very private matter and not one that people will openly share with you. as an accountant, I'm required to keep my clients information very confidential for one reason... people don't want their finances made public.
if you want to learn how to budget, take a course, research it online, go to the library and check out a book... but don't ask people to share what is in their bank account.
gees louise, honey... grow up a bit with your people skills.
