Our consciousness is spread through our five senses. it's because our conscieousness needs to enter another realm (that of dream); if our ears, eyes, taste, smell and touch senses are shut down (temporarily) to external stimuli, then our consciousness enters the real of dream that's why we do not know what is going on around us, we are not conscious! if theeyes are open, then we are awake, not asleep!

I think it is partly so our eyes can rest and not dry out, plus when we sleep our eyes roll in the back of our head, and for most people closing your eyes go along with this.

That's a good question. Have you ever tried to sleep without closing your eyes? I think it is impossible. It's just the way it is.
