First, y ou want a letter...you want to send something that shows you too time and expended money and energy.
Second, your thank you should do TWO things.
A: It should thank the interviewer (by name) for their time.
and
B: it should also re-emphasize your interest in the job, your qualifications and perhaps even something not mentioned in the interview. Be sure to drive home again those points where you know the interviewer was impressed either about your experience or your abilities.
You are trying to keep your name AND your qualificaitons in front of the interviewer as long as possible.
Lastly, be sure to wait at least a day before you mail the letter. You want your letter to show up after he's done interviewing and before he's ready to make his decision.

The "thank you" letter should be definitely typed and in a business format. I would e-mail it within 24 hours of the interview, but make sure the letter is personalized with comments from the interview, but at the same time you follow the professional style of creating it. There are samples on the web to look at.

Typed or hand written, by post or by email should not be too much of an issue. If I am the interviewer, I will be impressed by the thought, not the mode of how the thank you message reach me.

Well, if you consider the type of company, it would help to understand what is acceptable typically. You should also consider the interviewer. Are they pretty much old school? If so then go by strict "Emily Post" Ettiquette guidelines. Otherwise, I wouldn't worry about it - just send what you feel comfortable with.

I was always told that if your resume was typed the your thank you note should be typed - rule of thumb I believe. You can email them but state that a thank you note will follow. Some companies keeps the correspondence from prospective employees and puts them in a file and if they are hired it goes it there!@

Always handwrite a thank you note to your interviewer nothing else is necessary anything more would be overdoing it.
Good luck with your employment.

Just send a nice, simple thank you note. Don't email them.
