First, wash your face with warm water, not hot. This helps open your pores for a better shave. Pat dry, don't rub. Apply the shave cream or gel in upward strokes, against the grain. This helps the hair to stand up. Then shave with it for less irritation. Rinse your face with cool, not cold, water. This helps close the pores.

Also try pre-shave and after-shave products. I'm not talking about scented ones, I'm talking about the skin care for men products. Scented products can only irritate the skin more. A good pre-shave can soften the skin and hair for less irritation and pulling. A good after-shave can sooth the skin, and reduce bumps. Look in the razors and shaving aisle in your store to find them.

There's also a product specifically designed for a black man's skin needs:

Shave with the grain and there is a product called Tend Skin that is made just for razor bumps. You can get it at Sephora.com or you can get a product called No Bump at Sally Beauty Supply at about a third of the price. My husband is Middle-Eastern and has nearly the same thick hair like African American males and it works very well for him.

They have products at the beauty supply as well as the drug store for you. Use a very sharp razor, shave in the DIRECTION THE HAIR grows. Proactive helped my (black) husband...haven't seen a razor bump in 18 months now. He also uses his electric shaver NOT a disposable one anymore. He explained the medical/technical reason why its better for kinky hair, but all I heard was "blah blah curly hair blah blah cuticle..." THAT is the reason he says the bumps are gone, using the buzzer. Tea tree oil helps me and this is TMI, but there is a product for the female bikini area called "Coochie Cream." Sorry, but it works. You can search for it online. Tell me how that works out for you. (LOL just kidding.. the cream works, though)

SHave with not against. use hot water to shave and then cold water to rinse with to tighten up the pores so nothing can et in them to cause infection(bumps). good luck.

In 8th grade I had a little whiskers going on and my principal told me to shave down.

Hope that helps!
