Such as the "70's", "80's", "90's" and so on...am I right? Boyfriend thinks a generation is 5-7 years. Anyone?

Generations aren't measured by a certain time period, but more as a reflection of how society is at a given time. If you were born in 1973 and he was born in 78, then you are in Generation X and he is in Generation XY.

Actually generation usually applies to a Length of time of approximately 22 years. That's why a first generation would be a grandfather/mother, second father/mother and third the child/grandchild.
However there is a point in your theory in that usually events are classified as 70's 80's or 90's - but you can tell your boyfriend that he's way out!!!

A generation is more like 10 years. I am 29 and my BF is 36, but we are still mostly from the same generation, in my opinion.

Dictionary:

-The average interval of time between the birth of parents and the birth of their offspring.
-A group of individuals born and living about the same time.
-A group of generally contemporaneous individuals regarded as having common cultural or social characteristics and attitudes.

I'd say closer to 20 years. It's all pretty subjective where generations start and end. Wikipedia has some ideas.
