The rules vary in different parts of the country/world: Below are the 'historical' rules. When I played-we drew the 'court' on the sidewalk-1,2, single squares,3 4, side by side, 5-single,6,7 side by side, 8-single then 9, 10 side by side.
Rules-only 1 foot in the square, cannot jump in a square that has a maker (rock) in it. Your rock has to land inside the square and you have to play them in order: 1,2,3, etc.
If your other foot touches the ground while you are on one foot, your turn is over.
PLAYING: 1st player tosses rock into 1st square and jumps OVER the square with the rock in it all the way to the top, turns around and jumps back-stopping to pick up the rock (without falling) then jumps out of the court. If player the rock or jumps on the line, the rock stays in that square.
"How to Play Hopscotch
The first player tosses her marker into the first square. The marker must land completely within the designated square and without touching a line or bouncing out. If the marker lands in the wrong square, the player forfeits her turn. If the marker is successful, the player hops through the court beginning on square one. Side by side the squares are straddled, with the left foot landing in the left square, and the right foot landing in the right square. Single squares must be hopped on one foot. For the first single square, either foot may be used. Squares marked "Safe" "Home" or "Rest" are neutral squares, and may be hopped through in any manner without penalty.

When a player reaches the end of the court, she turns around and hops back through the court, moving through the squares in reverse order and stopping to pick up her marker on the way back. Upon successfully completing the sequence, the player continues his turn by tossing his marker into square number two, and repeating the pattern.

If while hopping through the court in either direction, the player steps on a line, misses a square, or loses her balance, her turn ends. The player starts on her next turn where the player last left off. the first player to complete one course for every numbered square on the court wins the game".

you have to through a stone to land in the square i.e starting with no. one the stone is not allowed to land on the line has to be withon the lines then the person jumps over the square and lands on the next two squares no,s two and three then one foot onto no five and so on they are not allowed to touch the lines either then thwhen they get to ten the strat over by throwing the stone onto no two and so on and so on when they miss the other person takes a turn until someone reaches ten with their stone and hops all the way there. hope this is understandable. I love that game.

Equipment: Chalk, sidewalk or driveway

Play: Draw the layout with the chalk - 3 single squares, 1 double square, 2 single squares, 1 double square, 1 single square. You can number the squares if you want. The two basic rules of hop scotch are 1) one foot in each square only, 2) Hop over the square with the rock in it.

Use a rock to throw into the first square. Hop on one foot over the square with the rock in it. Land with two feet on the double squares. On the second turn, throw the rock into the second square, and so forth. The tricky part is staying on one foot when the rock is in one of the side-by-side squares.
