British cars have been notoriously unreliable over the years, although they still have many charms. Ford is now the parent of Jaguar and I've read that Jaguar's quality/reliability has improved. However, keep in mind that British cars are generally at the high end and have a lot of complicated electronics. Complex electronics tend to drag down reliability ratings, so for maximum reliability, keep it simple.
I have always loved the look of Jaguars, though...

The 1981-1987 Jaguar XJ6 sedans have incredibly reliable mechanicals if they're kept nicely. Their electricals can be a trial, because the quality of the wiring harnesses somewhat poor and the insulation around the wires tends to get rubbed away.
The 1988-1989 Jaguars had many problems, and are generally considered the worst cars Jaguar had to offer. The 1990-1994 sedans are awesome cars, but their engines can be weak (though the 4.2 liter straight six is almost bomb-proof); and the 1995-2005 sedans have very reliable engines and electrical.
They are by far cheaper than Land Rovers to keep, as well. So long as you keep up on the maintenance schedule (a major service every 30,000 miles and an oil change every 3-5,000), you can expect an incredibly reliable, comfortable car that will last you well over 210,000 miles.
Buy a bad one or neglect the one you buy, and you'll be looking into very expensive repairs.
Land Rovers are good cars, I've been learning they'll cost you about $1,000 for any major work. They're nice, but very expensive to keep. Their electronics tend to have issues, and the 1995 models had many problems with their air suspension systems. But they are also reliable cars, and have more storage than Jaguars do.
On the whole, Jaguars keep their value better than Rovers and would be a better investment of your money.
Hope this helps.

I recently read that the new Landrover is having a lot of problems. Recently the Landrover was com paired to the Cadillac by an auto magazine. The Cadillac beat in in almost every test hands down. But remember one thing Ford owns both and is looking at selling both divisions off.

Overall Ford has been able to do some really good things quality wise with the low end Jag's. They took the Taurus and the Mercury Mystic and re bodied them as S-Type and X-Type Jags. Jaguar was notoriously bad through the 70's for electrical problems and a lot of that has gone away with Ford's acquisition. The Land rovers are still problematic from what I have seen with co-workers vehicles.

The British have never made a car that did not leak oil! This is why they cannot excel in computers- they can't make one leak oil.The Jaguar is cool but Ford wants to put the Taurus engine in it (...don't much like that idea but it might work for them).

My brother is a service writer for them. Don't buy one unless you are rich, and need to write off $5000. a year in repairs.
