Get him a card (hand-made if you can't afford a few bucks for a store-bought card).
No friend should ever be upset if you don't get them a present. Acknowledging the date should be enough. For real friends, it is the thought that counts.

It would be nice if you could find something personal of your own to give to your friend. your friend would appreciate the gesture even more if he knows the situation you are in. It only needs to be a gesture , have you got anything of your own that you could give to him, a personal belonging that means something to you?????. Even a card with a few well chosen words can mean a lot, you could even make one. I was once given a box of matches by a boy friend for a birthday gift, he truly had no money, he wrote a little note saying" I hope these light up your world you light up mine". Two weeks later, when he got paid, he bought me some beautiful earrings. Use your imagination see what you can give to make him happy that costs nothing. He is so lucky already to have a friend that cares so much, hope it works out.

perhaps u can acknowledge it withouth spending so much money. if i had absolutely no money, i would treat him 2 something homemade?? u can make hima cake, cookies? a birthday card/ if u have the supplies.ingredients?!
if not then just tell him, u r very sorry that u couldnt buy him a gift, and just give him a hug and wish him happy birthday.
it depends how much moeny u r willing 2 spend. if it is a little bit, then buy him a drink at the bar.
make him a small cake. not that expensive
good luck
wateva happens he will undersatnd if u really r stick 4 cash.!!

If he's a good or close friend he will probably know a bit about your finacial crisis and will understand. If not a well chosen card would suffice I'm sure.
If you know him well enough , a humourous token gift that doesn't cost the earth would be fine too.

NO! Why are you going to buy something you cannot afford!?
If you'd like, get them a birthday card, So you don't go empty handed. OR, don't go at all if they are expecting a gift from you. A REAL friend will understand!

Pick him a crazy and colourful bouquet of wild flowers, grasses, berries and anything else growing freely. Give it with love and happiness. Remembering his birthday and congratulating him is the greatest gift of all.

No, tell him you are "suffering a terrible financial debt."
Meanwhile, bake him his favorite cookies and wrap them in a tin and wish your good friend a happy birthday.

Absolutely not. If the friend is worthy of a gift then they are also going to understand your situation. If they don't understand then in what way are they a friend?

Make him a card or burn him a CD. You don't have to spend a whole lot of money to show that you care. Just put some effort into it! He'll understand and love you for it.
