I am doing fine art (visual arts) in September. I know that I will have a lot of presentations and I shall be grilled like a tomato in front of other people.

Does anyone know any good books to read to prepare me or at least for me to come up with good enough reasons why I have created the work I have. My verbal intelligence is so-so but I want to be ready when I get wrongly criticised.

Thank you all in advance.

There are two book I strongly recommend, they will give you good grounds to support your work and understand better modern art: 'Concerning the Spiritual in Art' and 'Point and Line to Plane' by Wassily Kandinsky. - Plus they are short ;)

'Principles of Form and Design', 'Principles of Two-Dimensional Design' and 'Principles of Color Design' by Wucius Wong are more orientated towards visual communication but they can be also applied to art.

A good book or two on art history would also be great but I don't have any specific references to give you. When studding art it is important to put it in the context of the historical period and to see the artistic tendencies as a progression of the one that came before.

"Drawing with the Right Side of the Brain." I am afraid I can not remember the author, as I have not seen my copy for years. It was recommended to me and got me started creating my art.

May I wish you the very best for your endeavors.

any book by Gombrich, he is excellent and has a great sense of humour. there's another great book called "art in Theory", and it is the artists talking about their own work. i think you will find it very helpful.
