This is a travel-related question, but I put it in the political section because air travel is now a political arena.

I live in the UK, and travel a lot to the US. I love America, love Americans and enjoy doing business over there.

Unfortunately I will also be avoiding all travel there for the forseeable future. I fully appreciate that air travel must be secure but I'm afraid that all I see is airports and airlines (on both sides of the Atlantic) using security as an excuse for treating passengers like cattle.

How come I can drink a bottle of water on the London Underground - a major terrorist target but I can't take a bottle of water onto a plane, even if I buy that water from an air-side retailer?

So to answer your question - nope it's currently not worth the hassle.

One friend of mine said its just a matter of time before we all have to wear hospital gowns to board a plane!

If you have to get to the airport 2 hours ahead of time, plus the, say, hour it takes to drive there (depending of course on how close you are to the nearest airport) and the hour it takes to get off the plane, get your baggage and be on your way, then, if a flight from point A to point B takes 1-2 hours, the actual time you spend is 5-6 hours. That means I can now drive from LA to Phoenix in about the same time it takes to fly there. The price might be comparable, too.

Probably the biggest limiting factor is the price of gas these days -- but you're paying the airlines for their gas so its probably not that much different. And the meals on the road are almost certainly better than you'll get at the airport or on the plane.

Yes it is still worth it. With rising gas prices it costs about the same as driving and saves time when compared to driving. It shouldnt be a hassle since you know what is ahead of you especially if you plan ahead. Standing in line isnt that bad just plug in the ipod listen to some tunes and relax.

Personally, I would stand in line for an extra 30 minutes to an hour to save my own life.
Wouldn't you?

Not if I don't have to.

We're already crammed in like sardines. Pretty soon they're be no seats, we'll be standing and holding on to straps overhead, so they can get more passengers on.

I know. I wish bushco would have decided to use greyhound buses instead of planes as a terrorist tactic. I hate grey hound anyways.

No it is not if I can drive. I would rather spend the money on gas if I am not in a huge hurry to get somewhere.

depends on where you are going and who you are going to see--the hassle is just relative---just something we have to deal with these days. sad but true, so just get there early.
