I don't think it is apathetic, I think it is paralyzed in indecision. Collectively we have no idea what to do about the problems facing us, and we lack leadership. We are stuck.

I am rather apathetic, and don't think me being so is so very horrible. If I actually cared about the millions of people who die every year from preventable conditions or from terrorist attacks or wars, wouldn't I be a basket case? I would never stop crying if I had to mourn the deaths of all those people. I don't believe that it is human to care about what happens to people you don't know, so I don't concern myself with it. There is no problem to be fixed.

Maybe because enough bad things have happened to them?

Many people are apathetic about the Sept. 11 issue. Probably because they didn't lose anyone they loved when that happened. You can bet your sweet @ss that if Joe Blow down the street lost a parent or spouse or sibling, he'd be completely different today.

I don't think we are apathetic. Think about 9/11. For the most part the country came together. I think we need to stop being all out for self and more for each other.
