depends, it can be something that keeps you living, it can be a goal that you set to achieve. The meaning of life is why you live, why life has a value for you if it does at all. Maybe you can expand the question a bit.

80% of humanity, the religious folks, don't need to ask the meaning of life, the church tells them....the supernatural explanation. But the rest of us can't swallow religious dogma, because there's no evidence. Nobody can prove that there life after death, that people are tortured or rewarded after life or that there's invisible spirits running around.
I've come to two conclusions recently:
1. Life has no meaning
2. Life has a million meanings.
First, there's a certainty that death and annihilation awaits not only you, but the Earth in general. It's an astronomical certainty that our sun will supernova and leave the earth a burnt crisp, not to mention all the other extinction level events around the corner.
Second, the million things that give us meaning are the pleasurable experiences we can conjure up during the short period we are here on the earth, in the form of the relationships we have with our kids and other people, and the 'housekeeping' types of purposes. What i mean by that are the curing disease, ending hunger, improving literacy, reducing crime, preventing war, helping others etc, etc.

As we all know, there are about a billion different answers to that question. And we have heard many of them already. The Buddhists will say to forget oneself in the pursuit of nirvana, the atheists will say to live it up before you die, and many other answers based on the faith of the individual.
The real question is "is there one meaning of life, or many. And if there is one meaning of life, are so many wrong?"
The Westminster confession of faith (one of the foundational documents of modern Christian thought) says that the first and most significant purpose of man is to "glorify God and enjoy him forever." So glory and joy. I can live with that. But that is not the meaning of life per se; it is group of people's answer to why we are here.
I like to think the meaning of life rests on something much larger than myself. An atheist answer to this question was to live it up, heal the sick, and rescue the poor, because one day we are all going into annihilation anyway.
I do not think that is so.
I believe if we are honest, we will all admit that deep inside we know that there is much more. I daily feel a deep longing that all is not right in the world, and I know there must be more.
I believe we were made to be a part of something much bigger than this and I can feel it in my deepest longings.
Can't you?
So in absolute agreement with the atheist who posted earlier, I think it is good to heal and rescue and increase the pleasure of the lives of others. But there is no way any of us can make their lives (or our own) as good as they should be. No, we need to work to improve them, but know that only at the end of this we are not going into the black, but into something larger, something greater.
The meaning of life is to begin to understand that something. That is the meaning of life. What is it we are going to? And how do we know for sure?
That is the meaning of life.
I have more thoughts on the topic. You can reach me at my blog seekingdaily.org

I believe you're talking about "The Meaning of Liff", a book by Douglas Adams. It redefines american towns and states' names to be different things. Online versions are available if you google.
