Well, I live in the Deep South. My neighbors are every ethnicity you can think of. Yes, there are still bigots here. But the most bigoted prejudged thing I ever saw occurred in the North East. Everything is not completely right, but it is improving. The South shall rise again - and better for it.

My kids get a better education here than in the north! I have the best paying job I ever had, and I will retire WARM - no more snow. Oh, and the food - I just love black-eyed peas.

Well, that would depend upon whether or not they are still fighting the Civil War and whether or not I would go down there only to be referred to as a Yankee (or worse).

That being said...I do have roots down there. I just choose to ignore them.

Have you ever seen Deliverance? How about Devil's Rejects?

That would be the "family" that we have had nothing to do with for two generations now. Yikes. And they are ALL residing somewhere in the deep south amidst the water moccasins, coral snakes and gator's.

I would like to see New Orleans and St. Francisville some time though...if they are still there after a few more hurricane seasons.

The Louisiana Police still steal cars from individuals and sell them at auction to secure their pay checks.

While much has changed, in some areas, its like going into a time machine.

I have hope for the future, though.

I am from the South and understand what you mean by "viewed unfavorably". The South has never been viewed favorably and will probably never be. Most folks enjoy viewing others unfavorably, just out of spite. Therefore, it will never be viewed favorably.

I don't think people really view it more favorably today than they did years ago.

The problem is, these people who are saying the south is full of rednecks, inbred hicks, poor blacks, etc. has obviously never been here (or at least hasn't been to any of the major cities here).

I live in an upscale suburb of Atlanta, and I can tell you that nobody here (at least, nobody I've encountered) is inbred, stupid, poor, ignorant, etc. I think people see movies like "Deliverance" and assume we're all like that. :D

deep south still lags in several areas, but in business it is booming, much more so than the north.

I lived in Mississippi for 5 years and hated everything about it. If I never go back again in my life it'll be too soon!
