This happened a mere few times, but has been repeated and repeated and repeated so damn much that people have come to believe it was common. There are a lot of old veterans who will say it happened to them, and they really believe it, but in almost all cases it didn't. It's just like if you surveyed everyone over 40 and asked, "Were you at Woodstock?" Probably over 2 million people would say yes, but there were only 400,000 there.

Independent here that leans Dem. It happened number of times at ports of entry. Some spitters were real protesters showing frustrations, some were paid by Republican for cam pain issue that Watergate sank, and some were following the crowd.
It's not happening today for number of reasons: De ms learn from there mistakes, and so do Re pubs how much positive coverage does all recruitment commercials buy. We might still be fighting there if one side had then all the tools they have today, and credit card with no limit. Don't recall how long the French were there before they agreed to democratic elections.

well, I don't know how a common of an occurrence it was for hippies to LITERALLY spit on returning vets, But they might as well have. A little saliva in their faces would have been much less insulting than finding out that the country they had served in good faith did not appreciate their sacrifice. It may just be a figure of speech, but there is a reason that that became a common phrase about the "protests" of the time.
Until you've stuck it out there in that jungle (or desert) don't dare to judge those who have.

Why don't you ask the vets this question? Sure it happened and is a disgrace. Recently a radio host named Kilmer was spit on at a function for former vets (he was a Marine) by a protester and he smacked them so justice was served there!

Sad to say, they did just that and more!
You see, when you KNOW you're right it's ok to engage in any behavior that makes YOU feel better. It's all about how YOU feel.
Oh, and they really CARED about people - at least the people who thought just LIKE them!
They changed tactics to suit the times. Today it's "I support the troops but not the war." If you listen to WHAT ELSE the people who make that statement are saying you'll quickly realize that they still HATE the military and the people in it.
You see, when you KNOW you're right...

Most of the country knew that we were losing in Vietnam, but those like Jane Fonda or those who spat on our returning soldiers were way out of line. There was also a large group of veterans who were against the war in Vietnam, and they were very vocal against it.
Note to U. S.::: Once we learn that not all world cultures embrace democracy and capitalism, we will be making some huge strides in international policy. Winning hearts and minds? Let them be!

Yes, they really did, called them baby killers too, and other very disrespectful names and acts......I would hope they have learned to have more respect, and a bit smarter, so to protest their dislike for war better......and then there is Phelps, who protests at funerals, and until recently, would do it so close, that the families could here.....I think, I would rather be spit on that to have that slime discrediting my boy or girl

No, it's completely true. The left has penis-envy of our military personel. I know of many with first-hand accounts of liberal spitting and other unAmerican activity upon return from Vietnam.
