One place to start is the Martindale Hubbell directory at www.martindale.com. This is a voluntary directory, so not all attorneys are listed - but most attorneys I know are, since it's basically free advertising. You can check on licensure with your state's bar association (google "North Carolina" and "bar association" - substituting your state, of course). Your state will also have a lawyers' ethics board that maintains records of ethical complaints on attorneys.

Call your state and local bar association. All attorneys have to be licensed in the state they practice in. These associations will have records of complaints and disciplinary actions against them. They will also be the issuer of the attorney's license to practice. If need be, most also offer referral services.

check with the State Bar (for your state). most State Bar websites have the attorneys listed and their license number. otherwise, you may need to contact them directly. as far as grievances, you can contact the State Bar for those as well. usually there is a grievance committee or discipline board.

The American Bar Association. If there are complaints and are still open, they will be public domain.
