dsl is fairly cheap to get now. i've seen it as low as $20/month in some markets. dial up is about the same price and painfully slow. check with the phone company in your area and see what they offer. often they give you a discount for bundling regular phone service with dsl.
if you want to stick with dial up there is a service that the phone company offers called 'call forward on busy'. you used to be able to use that in conjunction with some free software that would notify you if you had an incoming call while online. but i'm not sure if that's still available. call your phone company and see if they have anything for you.

First off, we need to know how much you're willing to spend on internet service since you mentioned that you're on a fixed income. And we need to know where you're located.
Second, DSL and Dial-up is no comparsion in speed. However, they are pretty much around the same price now.
Let's assume you're currently paying $5.00 - $21.00 monthly for crappy dial up and requires you to use your phone line. Instead why not go with AT&T/SBC offer of DSL for $12.95 a month and you'll still be able to use your phone.

I don't know where you are located but in some areas DSL is the same as dile up.. I know in my area 768 kb download speed on DSL is only 14.99 per month. Do some searching, call your phone company, perhaps you will find a great deal.

dial up is a lot cheaper than dsl. So use Dial-up instead b/c it runs straight from your phone #. i do know some dial up services let you know if an incoming call comes in and it will connect you to it.

Dial-up is usually cheaper but slower and you tie up phone lines but with Dial-up you have less chance of getting viruses because you can control when being on the internet where as faster internet you are constantly on the internet

If you're looking for something to let you know you have a call, Call Wave does. You just have to disable your call waiting *70,,then your dial up number. My mom has it and it works really good, It's like $5.00 a month added to your phone bill.

There should be a setting in your dial-up program that will disconnect if a phone call is trying to come in.
