I use a product by FountainTec that kills algae and prevents, takes only a few drops and is not harmful to birds, wildlife or my two Eskies who think the fountains, water features and bird baths are their personal watering troughs. You can find it in the garden section at Target.

The Algae is caused by the sun. Clean it out to get rid of the algae you already have and, if you can, put the water feature in the shade - this will cut down on future buildup.

Actually, silverbasses answer was pretty close, you just need to place a bundle of BARLEY straw into the feature, this, and a good shade protection will do wonders. This year has been very bad for algae, even the local parks and waterways have experienced the same problem.

Put in a small cloth bag (or large bag if a big pond) filled with straw. They use bales of straw in fisheries.
The straw attracts the algae which grows on it. You change the bag when you need to and the water stays clear.
Don't know why it works but it does.
Hope this helps :o)

Small amounts of chlorine can be used without harm to the birds, but it may not be enough to kill the algae you already have growing.

most algaicides are harmless to wildlife but check label to be sure.
put some elodea in to mop up the nitrates
provide shade
consider regular water changes
truth is most small water features are near impossible to keep clear.
