How he handles the next 6 weeks will answer that question. The team got to where it is with the talent it has. Now will he be able to keep the team focused enough. Remember what happened to the Mariners in 2001? Squeaked by the Indians in the ALDS and got run out by the Yanks in the ALCS. This after winning 116 games and their division by 14. See how they play the final two weeks, and that should help determine how good he is.

Give props to the General Manager for taking some of the best talent from Florida and using them to fill the holes from last year's team. The Mets suffered in the 1B and C slots to which Delgado (minus this slump he's in now) and Lo Duca have provided above average production. The best move made was for Wagner who took over for a terrible Braden Looper. Had Looper not blown so many saves last year, the Mets stood a good chance of reaching the playoffs via wildcard.
The biggest reason for the success of the Mets is owed to Jose Reyes for truly stepping up to his potential and igniting a powerful offense.
Managers don't win games, the players do, and the Mets have good talent. Randolph's role is select the best relievers to ensure a starting pitcher's win isn't blown by selecting based on scouting reports and a hunch, and to select who will pinch hit in the pitcher's spot, and whether someone should come in whose good defensively. Managers influence only a few games to any significant degree.
And since I'm not in NY and don't care for the Mets, I couldn't really judge what Randolph has done.

So far, I think Willie has handled the team really well. I like most of the choices he's made and I like how he works his pitching staff. My only criticism and it's a minor one, is that I do not understand the love he's showing Milledge. I've been to too many games where I've seen him misjudge a fly ball initially causing him to get a bad jump on the ball and allowing it to drop for a base hit. I would be playing Ledee over Milledge even though Milledge is a better offensive player. Lastings costs the team too many runs.
But I'll take Willie over Valentine and Artie any time.

Why would you think he was bad based on his body of work so far? He has had a team that has not been without problems, especially pitching problems and they have a double digit lead and have had the best record in the NL for most of the year. I grant you that had he had some real competition for the division or any competition for that matter, he's pretty much had none from the start of the season you would have a little more to go on. Certainly no one thought the Braves would die of old age. As it is anything less than reaching the World Series will be seen as a disappointment for him and The Mets.

Good Manager look what he had done with the team in the past two years.
Of course the GM has made some good trades but still Willie had to make it all jel

He has his team in first place by 13 games, so he must be doing something right. I am worried about the starting pitching but that's not his fault. Overall I think he has done a terrific job.

He is the best since Bobby Valentine this might be the year for him but I doubt he will not win the World Series.
